Today was a big day for Darby, we went to Aldi and I worked on her auto-leave it in the store, it was really obnoxious cause I was using a clicker anytime that her head wasn't plastered to the floor and looked at me instead! She caught on at Aldi, but then she got a piece of popcorn at ACE and that was the end of it haha, but she did okay there too!
When we came home, I decided to try to shape her to "get her bowl" and boy, did she pick up on it a lot faster than I thought she was! It took her around 7 minutes to pick up her bowl and start bringing it to me! I was super proud of her and how quickly she is picking up on different tasks that we are working on with her. Today, Linda wasn't able to make it to class because of the weather (Minnesconsin I tell ya), so Maddie ran the class for us. We spent a little bit of time in the classroom talking over some logistical things and plans for different events (including going to the prison again) that we have coming up! We then worked on "step" a little bit and Darby was really good with it (I kind of started training her on it a little bit earlier today).
We then moved to the larger open area in Hagestad to play some games with the dogs and training. I went to the group that went to play the game "My Dog Can Do That!" by Dr. Ian Dunbar. It's a really hard intense game. Eventually Maddie came over and saw the game and what they were asking us to do, and she had the whole group do the tasks - which were super hard! It was a good time because then we could gauge where our dogs were at! Darby did okay, but it gave us a good meter at where she was at and what we had to work on. One of the tasks they had us do was to ask our dogs what 2 + 1 equals and the dog had to paw at the ground 3 times, so we started to shape her "dig" using Jenny's jacket and some smelly treats. She was so tired at the end of the night that when we tried to see if she could "read," she was just so distracted and wasn't really paying attention to us, so Maddie just Jenny and I help clean up!
This year, we partnered with the Wild again for a fundraiser like last year. It is such a great time and you get all the free dog pets you want while you are there! Make sure that you click PawPADs when buying your tickets to make sure that $5 of your ticket goes to our organization! There will be a ton of other organizations there as well! Darby and I hope to see you there!
