Often times, I am asked how we train our dogs, and I have wrote previously about our training of the dogs, but I will just talk about it again because I love to talk about training and we read an article this week about behavior modification (which is training). I tried to find the article, but I had to pay for it everywhere I looked!! First, I'll talk about our training techniques. Everything I have learned in my classes and from Linda have taught me to use positive reinforcement and negative punishment. WAIT WHAT??? WE USE PUNISHMENT. Yes, we do, but not in the classical sense of punishment. I found a nice little diagram on the internet that describes the differences between punishment and reinforcement.
Recently, I have been working a lot on diabetic alert training with Neeco. Today was the first day that I did the whole sequence with him. The whole sequence entails smell the person (or in my case, the sample), alert, and then let the person know if it is high or low. Today was the first day that I tried doing the whole sequence with him and he did absolutely fantastic!! I've been working on his high/low movement of my arm separately from exposing him to a scent at least once a day. As you may notice, I am slightly cuing him by having my foot turned towards him and I physically cued him to nudge my leg. I only took this video after he had initially alerted me on his own and then I kept working with him on the scent and doing the whole sequence!! He also, if you noticed, nudged my foot before he nudged my leg, which makes sense cause that's where the scent was.
